The Umpqua UPG box is a new addition to our shop, but to me it has been old news. I have personally been testing out these boxes over the last year or so. Over that year these boxes have shined in every situation that you could possible use…… in some scenarios flat out abuse. These boxes were initially designed to cater to guides, with having that kind of performance minded design you really can’t go wrong.
Now days there are a lot of boxes out on the market, and unfortunately a fancy paintjob is a sale point that many anglers take into consideration. Take a step back and evaluate what you are really needing out of a fly box. For most it is simply to hold flies, but what about organization and protecting the hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars that you have invested.
Anyone who takes the time to check out these boxes, it does not take long to realize that they are no joke. Quality plastics, latches, foam, and don’t even get me started on the magnets in the midge boxes. Each one of these boxes have a uniqueness to their design, to the point I would be curious to the countless hours getting everything “just right”. Taking that into account the USEFUL cubic inches that these boxes have are unmatched. Boxes can be made to be cumbersome without distinct purpose, this is where the UPG box takes a step far above and beyond the rest of the market. With both increased capacity and organization along with durability it would seem to be a no brainer……. but I am far from done.
Another innovative feature that is light years beyond other boxes is that Umpqua had the thought to place Zerust tabs within the boxes. These tabs serve as a desiccant of sorts removing moisture from the boxes. What does that mean to the angler? Umpqua is stepping up to the plate helping you protect your investment once again. This will help to deter rust and overall breakdown of materials on your flies.
The UPG boxes offer substantial protection from the elements. Granted they are not waterproof, but they are a very solid box with tight tolerances that is weatherproof in most situations. If you have issues with water getting into these boxes something went very wrong.
Working in a fly shop everyone always asks what I use for gear, well here is one of them. These boxes are methodically designed for the hardcore fisherman. These boxes are amongst the best in the market and let’s just say that I won’t be swapping mine out anytime soon. That is unless of course Umpqua has another one on the drawing board, in that case………..
